The Arizona Students' Association (ASA) was established in July 1974, by the student body presidents of Northern Arizona University, Arizona State University and the University of Arizona. The concept for the organization was taken from an old state association called the Arizona Student Federation, which dissolved in the early 1970s from a lack of interest. However, during the latter part of 1974, the three student body presidents, "recognizing their common interests ... in order to strengthen the unity and purpose between universities ... in working toward common goals and to broaden the representative character of student associations ..." established the Arizona Students' Association
