Biography
I started my college career attending the STAR Program the summer of 2003. One week after I graduated from high school, I was living the college life. Since then I have been involved with the BF Scholars, a community service organization that represents the STAR program, and the Multicultural Student Center. I did that for my first two years. I am currently involved in M.E.Ch.A. (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicana/o de Aztlan) a political activist group committed to serving the Chicana/o community. We promote higher education, unity, culture, family, and knowledge. We will be hosting the National M.E.Ch.A. conference on campus in 2006. I am very proud to be a part of the organizing committee for the conference.
Why did you choose to attend Northern Arizona University?
I jumped in without testing the waters! I still had not decided where I was going to go to college and it was already March of my senior year. I was accepted to attend the STAR (Successful Transition and Academic Readiness) Program, a program for incoming freshmen. I thought I would try out here and see if I liked it. I loved it and have been here every since!
What do you like best about Northern Arizona University?
I like the size of Northern Arizona University. It gives one an opportunity to meet people and stay connected. I really enjoy the fact that I am more than a number in the classroom. Each of my professors knows my name and me personally. I also love the Multicultural Student Center. The MSC has provided me with many opportunities to make my college experience the best it could be. It is my home away from home.
What advice would you give a prospective student?
Do not stress out about finishing within a certain time period. Take your time and enjoy your classes. Find out how many credits suit you. Get involved on campus. The people you meet through clubs and organizations will become your family away from home. This will make your college experience the best it can be.
What do you do for fun on the weekends?
It all depends on how I feel. I use the weekends to rest, relax, and clean! I also like to have people over to my apartment for dinners, primarily those friends that live on campus and eat Ramen every day of the week. I also like to go to social gatherings during the weekends, like many college students do.
Describe the best professor you've had here and explain why.
The best professor I have ever had was Professor T.S. Amer for Accounting 256. He was very helpful and addressed concerns I had about the class and the College of Business Administration in general. He also had very good teaching methods that were helpful in the learning process.
What unique experiences have you had while attending Northern Arizona University?
I have had the opportunity to attend different leadership conferences. I had the privilege to present a workshop at the Women of Color Conference that was held this year on campus. I also attended a leadership conference at the University of Arizona that was very helpful in developing my leadership skills. One of the most enriching experiences was attending the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity in Higher Education in New York City. There I was able to meet other students around the United States that were just like me. All of these opportunities would have never arisen if I had not attended here.
