We have two student tracks for Orientation. Freshman are students who are starting at Northern Arizona University with 0-12 post-high school credit hours. Transfer students are students with more than 12 credit hours of post-high school work.
Freshman Orientation is a 2-day Orientation session. At this session you will participate in workshops and lectures from Financial Aid, our Gateway Student Success Center, representatives from the colleges and schools, academic advisors, faculty, student organizations, and many others. You will have the opportunity to get to know an upperclass Orientation Leader who can answer your questions. The Counseling and Testing Center will be available for you to take placement exams. You will meet with an advisor and enroll in your courses. You will stay in a residence hall on campus during Orientation.
Transfer Orientation is a 1-day event. You will meet with staff from the Office of Student Financial Aid, the Gateway Student Success Center and will meet with an advisor to enroll in your courses.
Family members are welcome to attend Orientation for a small fee which covers materials and meals. Family members have a separate agenda where staff will answer questions more specific to being a parent, grandparent, guardian or spouse of a student. Family members should make arrangements to stay locally for Orientation. Discounts are available on the Parents' Association website.
Orientation for students entering during the Fall Term is during the peak of summer each year - typically the end of May through early June. Students entering in the Spring Term may attend Orientation in December or January.
Orientation is a great opportunity to meet people and learn about life as a Northern Arizona University Lumberjack. At Orientation you will learn tips on navigating the university system, on succeeding academically and on getting involved in campus life. You will enroll in your courses and be prepared for the upcoming semester.
During Orientation you will receive a lot of helpful information. You will receive the Orientation Handbook - a guide to life on campus. You will have an opportunity to meet with students from many clubs on campus and gather information about Greek Life, Outdoor Activities, campus services, and other campus events. You also will have a chance to hear from faculty on their expectations from our students.
What you should bring will depend on the time of year in which you are attending Orientation. Flagstaff has 4 seasons. December and January tend to be cold and possibly snowy. June and July tend to be sunny and warm during the day and cool at night. It often rains in the afternoon in June and July. No matter the time of year, Orientation is a fun and informal event so dress comfortably.
You should bring any test scores or transcripts that you have, immunization information (if not previously submitted), personal items and some extra money to pick up your NAU sweatshirt or hat. In addition, please bring (and wear) comfortable shoes as some walking is required.
Students staying in the residence halls for the 2-day freshman sessions need to bring a sleeping bag or linens for the bed.
An Orientation Leader is a returning NAU student (sophomore, junior or senior) who has been trained on the campus systems and is familiar with where things are, who does what, and where to go. Orientation Leaders take a 3 credit hour course and attend numerous other trainings to be prepared to help you succeed. If you are interested in becoming an Orientation Leader click here.
Signing up for Orientation is easy - simply click here. You will need to make sure that you have paid your enrollment deposit accepting your offer of admission.
