3. Know your deadlines

APPLY EARLY.   When you visit fafsa.ed.gov, you'll see forms for two academic years.  Be sure to pick the one that covers the next academic year.  For example, if you want assistance for the year that includes fall 2009 through summer 2010, complete the form for 2009-2010. 

The earlier you apply, the more options you will have.  Subsite the FAFSA as soon after January 1 as possible.  You must be offered admission as a degree seeking student to formally receive financial assistance.
