3. Complete the FAFSA
Maybe you think your need isn’t large enough for financial assistance. But you might be surprised. The only way to know for sure is to complete the FAFSA—the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
Filling out this form is the most important step in paying for college because the FAFSA gives Northern Arizona University a complete and official calculation of your expected family contribution—thus an idea of your financial need. Your need might be higher than your estimate, meaning you might be eligible for more assistance. The FAFSA also lets you apply for a variety of assistance programs with just one form.
Complete the FAFSA Online
You’ll need this code to complete the form: Northern Arizona University Code=001082
Things to Know About the FAFSA
- Apply early. When you visit the FAFSA site, you’ll see forms for two academic years. It’s important to pick the one that covers the next academic year. For example, if you want assistance for the year that includes fall 2005 through summer 2006, complete the form for 2005-2006.
The earlier you complete it, the more options you will have. Submit the FAFSA by February 14 to allow enough processing time. You will receive priority consideration for all programs if Northern Arizona University receives your application by March 1.
- You must be admitted to Northern Arizona University to formally receive a notice of financial assistance.

- Men between the ages of 18 and 25 must register with Selective Service to be eligible for financial assistance.

- Read and follow all instructions on the FAFSA site to make sure you provide accurate information.
- Be sure to sign your FAFSA so it can be processed. Print a copy of the signature page, sign it, and mail it in.
- You should reapply each year whether or not you receive financial assistance. Awards are given annually, and because situations and programs change, your eligibility for assistance in future years may also change.
What Happens Next
- Once your FAFSA is processed, both you and Northern Arizona University will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) which lists your official expected family contribution. This information allows Northern Arizona University to evaluate your eiligibility for financial assistance.
- Please contact Northern Arizona University Office of Student Financial Aid with any questions or concerns regarding your FAFSA once you have received your SAR.
