Our Pledge to Arizona Residents
Our Pledge to Western
What is The Pledge? The Pledge tuition rate is Northern Arizona University’s commitment to provide a constant tuition rate, as set by the Arizona Board of Regents for eight (8) continuous semesters (summer and winter sessions excluded), beginning with the term of an undergraduate student’s initial enrollment on the Flagstaff campus of Northern Arizona University.
Does The Pledge tuition rate save students money? No. This is not a tuition discount plan or college savings plan. By knowing that the tuition rate won’t change for four years, students and their families are able to calculate total tuition costs for an undergraduate degree.
What is the purpose and benefit of The Pledge tuition rate? The purpose of The Pledge is to help make the costs of a college education more predictable for undergraduate students enrolling on the Flagstaff campus and their families. The benefit is that it protects students and their families from sudden spikes in tuition and enables them to estimate and budget for college expenses more accurately.
Who qualifies for The Pledge tuition rate? The Pledge tuition rate applies to all undergraduate students, resident or non-resident, freshman or transfer who enrolls fall 2008 or after in a bachelor’s degree program (or second bachelor’s degree) on the Flagstaff campus.
Will a student entering Northern Arizona University in fall 2009 pay the same Pledge tuition rate as a student entering in fall 2008? No. Each entering class will pay a different Pledge tuition rate based on the four-year average of anticipated tuition rates.
What if the first time I enroll is in the spring semester? You will pay the rate in effect for that academic year for eight semesters.
What if I don’t complete my degree in eight (8) consecutive semesters? If you need a 9th or 10th semester in which to complete your bachelor’s degree, you will pay the same tuition as the students who first enrolled the year after you.
What if I need more than eight (8) semesters to complete my degree? If you need a 9th or 10th semester in which to complete your bachelor’s degree, you will pay the same tuition as the students who first enrolled the year after you. If you need an 11th semester, you will pay the rate in effect for new students entering that year.
What if I need to take time off for any reason? You can be out of school one semester and re-enroll at your original Pledge tuition rate, but your eight-semester time period will not be extended by that one semester.
If you are out of school for two (2) consecutive semesters or more, when you return, you will pay the same tuition rate as the students who first enroll the semester you return. You will have eight (8) semesters from that time to complete your bachelor’s degree at that rate.
Are transfer students eligible for eight (8) consecutive semesters at The Pledge tuition rate? Yes. Regardless of the number of credits you transfer, you will have eight (8) consecutive semesters at The Pledge tuition rate to complete your bachelor’s degree.
What if I don’t need eight (8) consecutive semesters to complete my degree? Your Pledge tuition rate will be in effect for the number of semesters you need, up to eight (8) consecutive semesters.
What if I am a part-time degree-seeking student?Part-time students will pay a prorated per credit hour rate based on The Pledge rate.
What if I am a non-degree-seeking student (part-time or full-time)? Undergraduate students not seeking a degree will pay the same tuition rate as continuing students.
What if I start at Northern Arizona University as a part-time degree-seeking student and then enroll full-time? If you enroll as a part-time, degree-seeking undergraduate, you will pay a pro rated per credit rate based on The Pledge rate. You will have eight (8) consecutive semesters at The Pledge rate whether you’re part-time or full-time.
Are continuing students eligible for The Pledge tuition rate? Yes. Information is coming soon. Please check back.
I’m a continuing student, how do I sign up for The Pledge? Will add procedure for signing up when available.
How does The Pledge affect returning students? Tuition for returning students is a separate rate set by the Arizona Board of Regents. However, returning students may sign up for The Pledge tuition rate and be guaranteed that rate for eight (8) consecutive semesters.
What if I change my major? You still have eight (8) consecutive semesters from your first enrollment to complete your bachelor’s degree at your Pledge tuition rate. If you need a 9th or 10th semester in which to complete your bachelor’s degree, you will pay the same tuition as the students who first enrolled the year after you.
Can I opt out of The Pledge tuition rate and pay the continuing rate instead? No. Beginning fall 2008, The Pledge tuition rate is the tuition rate for all new first year and transfer students enrolling on the Flagstaff campus.
How does study abroad affect someone paying The Pledge tuition rate? If you register for one semester of study abroad through Northern Arizona University, the time period for which your tuition rate is in effect is not affected. If you register through a university other than Northern Arizona University, and you return to Northern Arizona University after two (2) semesters, you will continue to pay the same tuition rate as when you entered and will have used two (2) of the eight (8) semesters of The Pledge tuition.

What happens if I change my status from non-resident to resident? You will still maintain your original eight (8) consecutive semesters at The Pledge tuition rate. Your tuition rate will be reduced to the resident rate of your entering class, effective the term for which your Arizona residency status is approved.
How does this affect my scholarship? Because your tuition is the same for eight (8) consecutive semesters, the value of your scholarship will remain the same for that time period as long as you meet the scholarship renewal criteria.
What if I become a graduate student before the end of my eight (8) consecutive semesters? The Pledge tuition rate is for undergraduate study in Flagstaff only.

What about meal plan rates? Our Pledge is that students will see no increase in the meal plan rates for two (2) years. Rates will vary if a different meal plan is selected in the second year. Meal plan rates are usually set by the Arizona Board of Regents in late March or early April.
